Togo has officially removed visa requirements for citizens of all African countries, becoming one of the few nations on the continent to allow visa-free entry for every African passport holder.

The new policy, which took effect immediately on May 18, 2026, allows African travelers to enter Togo without a visa for stays of up to 30 days. The announcement was confirmed by the Togolese government through a statement from the Ministry of Security led by Colonel Calixte Batossie Madjoulba.

According to the government, the visa-free policy is aimed at strengthening regional integration, promoting tourism, encouraging business opportunities, and improving the free movement of people across Africa. Officials described the decision as part of Togo’s broader vision of becoming a regional hub for trade, services, culture, and investment.

Under the new regulations, travelers from African countries will still be required to complete an online travel declaration at least 24 hours before arriving in Togo. The declaration must be submitted through the government’s official digital platform(voyage.gouv.tg). After that, travelers will receive a travel authorization document to present at border entry points.

The Togolese government also clarified that the visa exemption does not remove existing immigration, security, or public health requirements. Border agencies, airport authorities, and immigration officers across land, air, and sea entry points have already been instructed to implement the policy immediately.

The move places Togo among a growing group of African countries adopting more open travel policies for African citizens. Countries such as Rwanda, Benin, Ghana, The Gambia, and Seychelles have also introduced similar visa-free or near visa-free policies for African travelers in recent years.

Analysts say the decision strongly aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 vision, which promotes a borderless Africa with stronger economic cooperation, easier mobility, and increased intra-African trade. Experts believe reducing visa restrictions could significantly improve tourism, entrepreneurship, labor mobility, and regional investment across the continent.

According to the African Development Bank’s Visa Openness Index, only a limited percentage of travel routes within Africa are currently fully visa-free, despite years of discussions about continental integration. Togo’s latest decision is therefore being viewed as another important step toward deeper Pan-African cooperation.
